ChatGPT Tips

ChatGPT 5 has recently dropped and I’ve been hooked on all things LLM in preparation of a presentation/workshop in October. It’s a great tool that I’ve gotten a lot of value out of and I wanted to share some of my favorite tips that you can channel when you try it out yourself.

Crafting a good prompt

This tip I pulled from the book The ChatGPT Revolution by Donna McGeorge and its called the 3Ps (though I get by with just 2)

Asking Chat a question should seem pretty basic and it is, but with a few tweaks you can get more out of any request. The three ps are perspective, purpose and personality and defined as such:

Perspective is all about giving Chat as much context as possible about your situation and where you are starting in a request before getting to the ask.

If a friend asked you for a movie recommendation they will get a different answer than if a new coworker asks you for a movie recommendation. Because you don’t know much about your new coworker, it can be hard to pinpoint what would be a good suggestion without some additional info.

“I really love comedies like What About Bob, Detention and MacGruber. I also love stories where the main character is going through a crisis and the resolution involves a coming of age story later in life.”

Purpose is just stating how you hope to use said requested information.

Recommending a movie for me based off this information is pretty straightforward, but what if I’m going to be showing this movie to a small group of 6-8 and some of them hate when bad things happen to animals?

“Can you recommend movies that fit this theme but make sure no animals get hurt?”

McGeorge’s final P was personality which I defined as “how you want this information delivered or in what context does it help you the most”.

Feel free to check out her book as it’s filled with some great takeaways.

Know/Define the shape of the answer

When you ask Chat a question, it’s best if you already have an idea what parameters the answer should fall within. This is useful so that you can know if/when it goes outside the lines and gives you answers that aren’t real.

Hallucinations

I’ve asked Chat to help me come up with a list of tactics for my friend’s DnD character so he could easily reference it in game. The initial response had several great actions he could take based off current table needs…unfortunately some of the information was wrong and its only because I’ve been keeping up with DnD for years that I could pick out where it went off the rails.

You need to be knowledgeable on a topic to determine what’s actually valuable and right or you can be mislead.

Give Shape

There’s a whole host of questions I’ve asked Chat for that I’ve heard over the course of my life but never found a document or book that talked about what I needed to get a proper grasp of the topic. Leaning on Chat to help allowed me to dig into those topics as much as I wanted and to create my own reference material.

I was playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard and there’s a moment where someone mentioned needing to “clean house” and it got me thinking that I’ve heard that phrase half a dozen times in my life. “Get your house in order” has popped up often enough that I knew it meant to take steps to right your ship, but was curious if there were examples of what that actually looked like.

When I took that question to Chat, I was given a very easy to understand breakdown of the term and examples of what that looked like for corporations, non-profits and politics.

ChatGPT can be very useful! I’m going to be hosting a ChatGPT Workshop in October at Green Hills if you want to come down in person and share your knowledge or hopefully learn some cool ways it can benefit you.
